Partly at home; collegiate school in Cheshire. India. Commenced life in Government service at gun foundry, Cossipore, near Calcutta. In India throughout the Mutiny.
Subsequently travelled extensively through Australia, China, Japan, Java, and amongst the South Sea Islands, including New Guinea, New Britain, New Ireland. Also in America, Canada, Russia, and Europe generally. Long attached to the Hour newspaper as a special correspondent.
Contributed largely to the periodical literature of the day.
