(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Excerpt: ... the words ascribed to Jesus leap suddenly forwards to the future, Mark viii. 38, ix. 1:--For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also shall be ashamed of him, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There be some here of them that stand by, which shall in no wise taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God come with power. Who is the Son of Man, and when will he come? Reserving for the present the attempt to ascertain whether Jesus used this language, and, if so, with what meaning, let us first of all indicate how it was understood by the Evangelists and their contemporaries. i 2. The Faith of the Church. Two points only need be noted now. The great difficulty which the first Christians encountered in presenting the claim of their Master to be the Messiah, was the fact that he had suffered and died. To the Greeks, Messiah's cross was foolishness: to the Jews it was worse, it was a stumbling-block. This difficulty might be overcome in two ways. It might be shown that he had himself foretold his decease, and that it conformed to prophecy. And it might be shown that he would come again in glory. (1) That Jesus sought to strengthen the apostles to face opposition and danger in Jerusalem is without doubt historically true. Let it be observed, however, that in the warnings already cited, § 1, 4, he does not speak of himself in the first person; he is always described in the third person as the 'Son of Man.' This title appears with peculiar frequency in this connection. Mark for instance, supplies the following additional instances:--ix. 9. And as they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them that they s...

James Martineau was for more than four decades a professor in what is now Oxford’s Harris Manchester College. His theology integrates the very personal in religious experience with the transcendent and seeks to infuse daily living with the sense of divinity. He retained a sense of awe which rationalism sometimes excludes, and in some ways anticipated Albert Schweitzer’s ideas of reverence for life. Notably, Schweitzer also had connections with Harris Manchester.

(Since the First Edition of this book was published in 189...)
Since the First Edition of this book was published in 1890, the First Three Gospels have been the subject of eager study, both in this country, and in the great schools of the continent of Europe and the United States. English students will find the results of these manifold labours duly registered (from different points of view) in the two great collections of Dr. Hastings Dictionary or the Bible, and Encycl padia Biblica. In the absence, however, of any more recent popular exposition, this book is re-issued, with some modifications, in the hope that it may still supply to some of those who approach the New Testament without technical aid, the outlines of a method of literary and historical enquiry into the sources of the life of Jesus.1 The value of the Gospels as witnesses to the career of the prophet of Nazareth having been recently challenged from opposite sides by the exponents of secularism and theosophy, an attempt has been made, in a concluding chapter, to sketch the general results to which the previous treatment appears to lead Those whose duty as teachers has required them to convey to others the impression of the most significant figure in human history, will be most ready to acknowledge the difficulty of the task, and to forgive the hand that fails Oxford, September th, 1904. (Excerpt from The Bible in the Nineteenth Century This bo...)
Excerpt from The Bible in the Nineteenth Century This book originated in a course of lectures delivered in various towns in England, Scotland, and Wales, during the years 1900 - 1903. Their object was to awaken the interest of Christians of all Churches in the modern study of the sacred books of their religion, by sketching the history of the processes of investigation, and indicating some of the results which have been so far attained. In preparing the lectures for the press, it was possible to expand the treatment of some topics which were handled with inevitable brevity in oral exposition; but their sequence has not been altered, and the author has endeavoured throughout to write with the memory of his audiences still before him. Questions of theology have been kept in the background, except in the last lecture, where it appeared desirable to consider some modern forms of the doctrine of authority both in the Bible and the Church. The Author desires to express his sincere thanks to the Delegates of the University Press, Oxford, for their kindness in permitting him to employ the Revised Version in the lectures on the Gospels; and to the two friends who have so generously aided him with suggestions and corrections in the reading of the proofs.
