Career

Justice of peace, New London, Connecticut. Member Connecticut Assembly from Norwich, clerk, 1757. Speaker Connecticut House of Representatives, 1760.

Commissioned captain troop of horse 3d Regiment, Connecticut Militia, 1754, Lieutenant 1st company 5th Regiment, 1760, captain, 1764. Made assistant by Connecticut Assembly, 1764. Lieutenant colonel 3rd regiment Connecticut Militia, 1765.

Appointed probate judge for Norwich District, 1773. Moderator of large meeting assembled “to take into consideration the melancholy situation of our civil constitutional liberties, rights and privileges,” Norwich, June 6, 1774. Member Connecticut Council of Safety, 1775-1779.

Appointed one of 2 major gens. from Connecticut, 1776, major general entire Connecticut Militia, 1777.
