Career
A key player in the days when Sunderland was known as the "Bank of England club" Hedley played right-back alongside the football transfer record breaking Trevor Ford and Len Shackleton. Hedley"s footballing career ended after 295 appearances breaking his leg in training after which he worked for the local authority and taking on the more leisurely sport of Pigeon Racing winning several prestigious awards (partnered with Jimmy Lindsay) including the Up North Combine in the 1970s. Hedley died in 1985 suffering from Parkinson"s disease.
