Jack Leavitt received a Bachelor of Arts from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York in 1951 and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Illinois in 1957. He was admitted to the bar in 1958.
From 1958 to 1960 Jack Leavitt was a legal editor at Bancroft-Whitney, San Francisco. In 1960 he was appointed as a legal editor at Continuing Education of the Bar. From 1962 to 1980 Jack worked in private practice in Berkeley and San Francisco. For seven years he served as a deputy district attorney at Alameda County, California. In 1987 he became a staff attorney at 6th appellate district court and held this position till 1988.
