I have practiced law for more than 40 years. What I like most about my profession is that it aspires to an ideal. Even if, in the process of execution, the results are often flawed, the legal system itself is built to achieve correctness to some human problem. The faults in the system are "...not in our stars, but in ourselves...."
I seriously worry about the scope of the problems facing this country and, in fact, the world. I once wrote a piece for the FQXi Research Group entitled "Prometheus Unbound: A Rational Approach to AI" which fairly summarizes my observations about humanity's future.
The humorist, George Carlin, expressed in entertaining fashion the circumstances which will lead to our collapse. I enjoy his work because he so plainly states the case for our predicament; but, he was fundamentally a pessimist as to our ultimate outcome. My short piece for the FQXi says as much about our problems as Carlin; but, I offer an optimistic version of our future. I wish more people would read it. I also hope that I turn out to be right.
