Jack Umstatter was born on June 29, 1950, in New York City, New York, United States. He is a son of John Umstatter, a beverage company executive, and Mary Umstatter, an executive secretary.
In 1972, Jack graduated from Manhattan College cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1975, he received a Master of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Later, he continued his education at Long Island University, graduating with a degree in educational administration in 1991.
In 1972, Jack began his career as an English teacher, working at different West Islip Public Schools, a post he held till 1994. In 1990, he was appointed an adjunct assistant professor of education at Dowling College in Oakdale. Later, in 1994, Umstatter was hired as an English teacher at Cold Spring Harbor Public Schools.
During his career, Jack also acted as a member of the National Council of Teachers of English.
Currently, Umstatter teaches English in the Cold Spring Harbor School District and literature at Dowling College.
