In 1944, Jack Youngerman enrolled at the University of North Carolina, where he studied till 1946. In 1947, he graduated from the University of Missouri, which he attended since 1943. In 1947, after graduation from the the University of Missouri, he left for Paris. There, he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he studied since 1947 to 1949.
Since 1947 till 1955, Jack lived and worked in Paris. While in Paris, he realized, that he did not want to paint the "soft kind of Abstract Impressionism", that was prevalent in France in the years after World War II. During that time, he also incorporated the Hard-edge, Geometric abstraction and Constructivist elements into his paintings, that would characterize his mature style.
In 1956, the artist settled down in New York, where he lived until 1995. There, he established a studio, together with Kelly, Barnett Newman and Agnes Martin. During the period from 1959 to 1960, Youngerman's works were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, along with the works of such artists, as Jasper Johns, Frank Stella and others. In 1977, he started to create freestanding cast fiberglass sculptures. Some time later, Jack began to work with steel and aluminum.
During his lifetime, the artist held many solo exhibitions at different museums and galleries, including Heland Wetterling Gallery in Stockholm (1989), Guggenheim Museum (1986) and others. Currently, he lives and works in Bridgehampton, New York.
Jack Youngerman received several awards, including National Endowment for the Arts Award (1984), Guild Hall Lifetime Achievement Award (2004) and others.
Youngerman's works are kept in the collections of different institutions and museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and others.
Quotations: "The whole primary thing I work with in my paintings is an exploration and articulation of all the possibilities of abstract shape."
Jack married Delphine Seyrig, an actress, on July 3, 1950. Their marriage produced one son — Duncan Pierre, who would later become a composer.
