Porter studied at the University of Iowa, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1967. He later received a Juris Doctor with high distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law. During his law studies, he served as Notes and Comments Editor of the Iowa Law Review from 1968 to 1969. Porter was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and the Order of the Coif.
Porter began his professional career in legal practice after being admitted to the bar in 1969 in Iowa and Wisconsin. He later gained admission to the Florida Bar in 1973. Over the course of his legal career, Porter worked with the law firm Foley & Lardner and later became associated with Kildeer Court, where he practiced in the areas of corporate and business law, real estate transactions, and estate planning and probate.
Porter has been a member of several professional legal organizations, including the Iowa State Bar Association, the State Bar of Wisconsin, and The Florida Bar.
