Jack David Woodall is a retired American lieutenant general who served in senior United States Army command and staff positions, including commander of the 2nd Infantry Division and United States Army Japan. After retiring from military service in 1992, he became president of Innovative Technology in Brooksville, Florida, and participated in civic and youth organizations.
Background
Jack David Woodall was born on August 1, 1936, in Ferndale, Michigan, to William John Woodall and Florence Gladys Feyen Woodall. Ferndale is a city in the Detroit metropolitan area, whose industrial setting formed part of the economic environment of Woodall's childhood.
He married Janice Tracy Lanier on July 6, 1958. Their children are David Lanier, Kevin Langford, Elizabeth Tracy, and Matthew Thomas Woodall.
Education
Woodall received a Bachelor of Science in business from Stetson University in 1958. Stetson, founded in 1883 in Florida, developed as a private university with programs in business, liberal arts, and professional education; its Army ROTC program provided Woodall's route into commissioned military service.
He later earned a Master of Science in international affairs from George Washington University in 1969. Founded in Washington, D.C., in 1821, the university's location and academic traditions connected graduate study with public affairs, international relations, and national government.
Woodall entered the United States Army as a commissioned second lieutenant in 1958 and advanced through the officer ranks to lieutenant general. His military career included command, personnel administration, operational planning, and service in American, NATO, and overseas headquarters.
From 1978 to 1979, he commanded the 1st Brigade of the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Casey in the Republic of Korea. He then served at the Military Personnel Center in Alexandria, Virginia, first as chief of officer distribution from 1979 to 1981 and then as director of plans and operations from 1981 to 1982. The center managed personnel functions for the Army during a period of continuing Cold War readiness.
From 1982 to 1984, Woodall was chief of plans and policy with Allied Forces Southern Europe in Naples, Italy. The NATO command coordinated allied military planning in the Mediterranean and southern European theater. He subsequently served as assistant division commander of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado, from 1984 to 1986.
Woodall served with the Berlin Brigade from 1986 to 1987 and was identified in contemporary biographical material as its commanding general. The brigade was the United States Army formation responsible for maintaining the American military presence in West Berlin during the division of the city. From 1987 to 1988, he was deputy commanding general of V Corps in Frankfurt, West Germany.
In June 1988, Woodall assumed command of the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea, serving until November 1989. He then commanded United States Army Japan and IX Corps at Camp Zama from 1989 to 1992. These assignments placed him in senior command positions in two principal areas of the United States' Cold War alliance system in Europe and East Asia.
After leaving active military service, Woodall became president of Innovative Technology in Brooksville, Florida, beginning in 1992. He also participated in Hernando County civic and economic organizations, including the county chamber of commerce and economic development activities.
Woodall reached the rank of lieutenant general in the United States Army and held senior commands in Korea, Europe, Japan, and the United States.
He commanded the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea from 1988 to 1989 and United States Army Japan and IX Corps from 1989 to 1992.
Membership
Woodall held leadership and civic roles in organizations connected with military service, community development, and youth programs. He served as president of an Association of the United States Army chapter from 1986 to 1988 and as a director of the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce.
From 1989 to 1992, he was vice president of youth scouting organizations serving American communities in Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the Philippines. He also served as vice president of the Hernando County Economic Development Commission.
