A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, Friesen attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she played on the women"s ice hockey team
Friesen"s first coaching experience was as an undergraduate assistant with the Badgers. After playing professionally in Switzerland and the Czechoslovakian Republic the Badgers hired Friesen as a temporary assistant coach in 2009 after the coaching staff was re-shuffled while Mark Johnson took a leave of absence in order to coach the United States women"s national ice hockey team during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Friesen was hired to a full-time position in 2010 after Johnson"s return.
