James studied at Trinity College, Dublin.
In 1865 James became a Deacon, and in 1866 he was a priest. He was assigned as a Curate of Annagli (Belturbet) from 1865 to 1880. He was an Incumbent of St. Andrews, 1869-1892.
From 1880 to 1910 Jackson served as a Rector of Annagh. In 1897, he was a Private Chaplain to Bishop of Ivilmore, and from 1899 to 1910 he served as a Archdeacon of Kilmore.
James was a member of the General Synod of the Church of Ireland, 1885-1910, and of the Representative Church Body, 1898-1910.
