Jacob Bernoulli, II was a Swiss mathematician, physicist, mathematical professor of the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences, who worked in geometry and mathematical physics.
Background
Ethnicity:
The Bernoulli family came originally from Antwerp, at that time in the Spanish Netherlands, but emigrated to escape the Spanish persecution of the Protestants. After a brief period in Frankfurt the family moved to Basel, in Switzerland.
Jacob Bernoulli, II was born on October 17, 1759, in Basel, Switzerland, the son of Johann Bernoulli, II and Susanna König, and the younger brother of Johann Bernoulli, III.
Education
Bernoulli, II graduated in jurisprudence in 1778 but successfully engaged in mathematics and physics.
Career
In 1782, Bernoulli's, II uncle Daniel Bernoulli died and his chair of physics in Basel became vacant. Jacob applied for the chair and presented a work on mathematical physics to support his application. The decison as to who should fill the vacant chair was not made on academic grounds but was made by drawing lots. Jacob Bernoulli, II was unlucky and he was not offered this position which he would really have liked.
Bernoulli, II was then appointed as secretary to the Imperial Envoy to Turin and Venice. However, he was soon given the chance of another academic post when he received an offer from Saint Petersburg. He went to Saint Petersburg and began to write important works on mathematical physics which he presented to the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences. In 1788, he was named one of its mathematical professors.
Jacob Bernoulli, II drowned while bathing in the Neva on July 3, 1789.
Achievements
Jacob Bernoulli, II is remembered as a mathematician and physicist, who derived the differential equation of plate oscillations and wrote numerous treatises on elasticity, hydrostatics and ballistics.
Membership
Jacob Bernoulli, II was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences of Turin.
In 1788, he was named one of the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences mathematical professors.
