Called to Bar, 1893; State Attorney in late O.F.S Republic, 1896. Resigned, 1898; joined the Free State forces in the late war. Was present at the siege of Ladysmith.
Wounded at battle of Bothaville on 6th November 1900, and taken prisoner of war.
After war practised as a barrister in Johannesburg, and on the granting of Responsible Government became AttorneyGeneral and Minister of Mines.
