Carey spent 6 months working in a London bookstore as part of a work exchange program during her studies at the Lake Forest College. There she decided to write professionally.
She started her writing career while working at the Art Center of a local college. After ten years, she made a success with the publication of her first book, Kushiel's Dart, in 2001. She is also a contributor of articles and stories to magazines and newspapers, including Allure, Elle, New Yorker, and Wigwag.
