Career
According to Houbraken, who called him Jaques Backereel, he was one of those Backereelen that he discussed in his first volume of the Schouburgh. According to Houbraken, Joachim von Sandrart mentioned 7 or 8 Backereel family members that he knew personally. Today he is one of only three Backereel brothers documented.
The other two are Gillis Backereel and Willem Backereel.
According to the RKD he was also known as Jackus Backel or Backereil, and was a pupil of Tobias Verhaecht and became a master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1618.
