Bouveresse is important in France as the main commentator on and interpreter of Wittgenstein's Philosophy. He was also one of the first philosophers to introduce analytic philosophy into France. His work marks a departure in French Philosophy towards more analytical approaches t0 classic philosophical problems. His later work Uses the resources of analytic philosophy to criticize the claims of sceptical trends in current French thought. Instead of cynical and irrationaUst reactions to the crisis of modernity, Bouveresse defends an ironic rationalism that he traces hack to Wittgenstein, Musil, Kraus and Lichtenberg.
