Jacques Herold was born on October 10, 1910 in Piatra Neamt, Romania.
In 1927, Jacques entered the School of Fine Arts (present-day Bucharest National University of Arts) in Bucharest. Two years later, in 1929, he left the University.
In 1929, Jacques Herold started to work at an architecture bureau. The same year, he briefly contributed to a few Romanian Surrealist revues.
In 1930, the painter left for Paris, where he maintained a close friendship with Constantin Brancusi, for whom he also worked as a chef or even a secretary. There, he also got acquainted with Yves Tanguy.
In 1941, while hiding from the Nazi's at the Villa Air Bel near Marseilles, he collaborated with other surrealists on the creation of the Jeu de Marseilles, a set of surrealist playing cards.
Some time later, in 1947, Herold held his first solo exhibition. Also, since that time, he participated in all the important Surrealist exhibitions worldwide.
In 1958, he published the book "Maltraité de peinture" and the following year he held his exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London.
In 1986, Jacques Herold took part in the Venice Biennale.
During his lifetime, the painter created covers and illustrations for more than 80 books.

Herold married Violette Boglio on January 11, 1936. Some time later, the couple divorced. In 1944, Jacques met France Binard, who became his second wife. In 1956, the painter met Muguette Haudecoeur, who would later become his third wife.
