( The Aztecs were fierce, honorable, death-obsessed, and ...)
The Aztecs were fierce, honorable, death-obsessed, and profoundly religious. A famed scholar evokes the life of this complex culture on the eve of its extinction, when the Spanish arrived and conquered them--imprisoning Montezuma and strangling Atahualpa. "It is, without question, the most brilliant, the clearest and most readable portrayal of Aztec life available in any language."--The Observer.

Jacques Soustelle was born on February 3, 1912 in Montpellier, into a Protestant working-class family.
A brilliant student at the Ecole Normale Superieure, he was graduated in philosophy and ethnology at the age of 20. After several years of research on native American culture in Central America, he obtained a doctorate from the Sorbonne in 1937.
Politically a leftist at that time, Soustelle became secretary-general of the French Union of Intellectuals Against Fascism and War. Following the defeat of France in 1940, Soustelle joined the Free French forces and became chief of de Gaulle's secret service in Algiers. After liberation, Soustelle was elected to the First Constituent Assembly in 1945, becoming in turn minister of information, colonial minister, and, in 1947, secretary-general of de Gaulle's Rally of the French People (RPF). In 1955 Soustelle was appointed governor-general of Algeria by Premier Pierre Mendes-France. Soustelle at first advocated a federal solution for Algeria, but soon abandoned it for insistence on complete integration with equality of rights and duties of French and Muslims. Recalled by the Mollet government in 1956, Soustelle is credited with engineering the downfall of two subsequent ministries. Soustelle was a leader of the May 1958 civil and military rebellion in Algeria that led to de Gaulle's appointment as premier, and he founded the Gaullist Union for the New Republic (UNR). Named minister of information, he worked untiringly to achieve acceptance of de Gaulle's new constitution in the referendum of October 1958. Under the Fifth Republic he was appointed minister for the Sahara and for atomic affairs. As the Algerian crisis deepened, however, Soustelle and de Gaulle found themselves in increasingly divergent positions, with Soustelle adamant in his insistence on integration of Algeria with France. In February 1960 he was removed from the cabinet, and two months later he was ousted from the UNR. He went into voluntary exile after the abortive military uprising in Algeria in 1961. After Algeria gained independence in 1962, he was sought by the French for allegedly plotting against de Gaulle's life. In 1968 Soustelle returned to France after the proclamation of a general amnesty and resumed his academic career. He was elected to the Academie Francaise in 1983. Soustelle died at Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, on August 7, 1990.
