James D. Ackerman was born in August 14, 1950 in the family of James D. (in U.S. Navy) and Marjorie R. (a homemaker; maiden name, Carter) Ackerman.
Since 1981 James D. Ackerman is a Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, San Juan. He is also a member of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy, Botanical Society of America, American Society of Plant Taxonomists, Ecological Society of America, Association for Tropical Biology, American Orchid Society, CBS, IVCN.
