Adams was born on September 24, 1943 in Sydney, Australia; the son of John George Adams and Beryl (Chant) Adams.
Adams studied at the North Sydney Boys High School. In 1964, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Sydney. Also in 1970, James was given a Ph.D. from Brasenose College. The same year he earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of Cambridge.
Adams began his career as a teaching fellow at the University of Sydney in 1965 and held the position for a year. In 1967, he was appointed a commonwealth scholar at the University of Oxford. Also James served as a Rouse Research Fellow in Classics at Christ's College Cambridge from 1970 to 1972.
In 1972, he became a lecturer of Greek and Latin at the University of Manchester. Then in 1978, Adams took a position of a senior lecturer of Greek and Latin at that university. In 1982, he became a reader of Greek and Latin at the University of Manchester. He worked as a professor of Latin at that university from 1993 to 1995.
In 1994, James was appointed a visiting senior research fellow at St. Johns College. In 1995, he held a position of a professor of Latin at the University of Reading, where he worked until 1997. In 1998, he became a senior research fellow at All Souls College and had held the position for twelve years.

2003In 1992, James Noel Adams was elected a Fellow of the British Academy. He is an honorary member of Brasenose College Oxford, as well. In 2007 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea.
On March 22, 1971 James Adams married Genevieve Lucienne Baudon. They have a child.
