Orlin did his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a bachelor"s degree in mathematics in 1974. He earned a masters degree in mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1976, and a Doctor of Philosophy in operations research from Stanford University in 1981 under the supervision of Arthur Fales Veinott, Junior. He joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty as an assistant professor in 1979, and became the Brooks Professor in 1998.
He is also a Fellow of Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences and a Margaret MacVicar Faculty Fellow, Massachusetts Institute of Technology"s highest teaching honor.
