Oleh Lysheha is considered the "poets' poet" of contemporary Ukraine. A dissident and iconoclast, he was forbidden to publish in the Soviet Union from 1972 to 1988. James Brasfield was born on January 19, 1952, Savannah, Georgia, The United States, to Williamson Glover Brasfield, Jr. (a chemical engineer) and Marion Luke Brasfield (an accounting clerk).
James Brasfield studied at Armstrong-Atlantic State University and became a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1975. In 1979, he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry from Columbia University.
Brasfield served as a visiting assistant professor of English at Western Carolina University in 1984-1987. Since 1987 he works at Pennsylvania State University as a senior lecturer in English. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukraine from 1993 through 1994; he later returned to Ukraine to teach at Yuri Fedkovych State University in 1999.
Brasfield is also known for his translations of the poems of Oleh Lysheha, Ukranian poet.

1999James Brasfield is married to Charlotte Holmes since March 7, 1983. Together they have a son named Williamson Stanhope Brasfield.
