I can go from one to another, sort of seeing the whole thing mapped out the way it's going to be. And that's how we were with this house," the author says. "We discussed every piece of furniture, the fabric, the art, the layout of the rooms … we told the contractors that we would not make any changes … wouldn't change our minds. They didn't believe us, but we didn't make even one change."

James Brendan Patterson is an American best-selling thriller writer in the world today and in total, James’s books have sold over 275 million copies worldwide. He is a creator of the famous character of psychologist Alex Cross from the popular thriller novel series. Being an author of over 71 novels with 19 of which being at the top of the list of New York Times bestsellers, Patterson remains amongst the most widely read writers.
Background
James Brendan Patterson was born on March 22, 1947, in Newburgh, New York, the only son of Charles and Isabelle Patterson. His mother was a teacher and his father was an insurance broker. James Patterson grew up in a house full of women that included his mother, three sisters, and grandmothers.
Education
Patterson attended Manhattan College, a Roman Catholic liberal arts college in Bronx, New York, and received a bachelor's degree. In 1970, he decided to enroll in Vanderbilt University's English literature graduate program. He got a Master of Arts degree in English from Vanderbilt University.
Patterson's first job was at J. Walter Thompson advertising agency, as an entry-level junior copywriter in 1971.
Though Patterson climbed the company ranks, eventually becoming its North American CEO, he also wrote fiction in his spare time. His first published book, The Thomas Berryman Number, came out in 1976. It won an Edgar Award, a top prize for mystery writers.
Patterson penned several other novels, but it was not until 1993 that he achieved breakout success with Along Came a Spider. Patterson used his work experience to orchestrate a television ad campaign for the novel, which helped it become a best-seller. In 1996, Patterson left his life as an executive in order to focus on writing.
Many of Patterson’s books have featured Detective Alex Cross, the protagonist of Spider. Other Cross books include Kiss the Girls (1995), Pop Goes the Weasel (1999), Violets Are Blue (2001), Mary, Mary (2005) and Cross My Heart (2013). Both Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry have portrayed Alex Cross in movie adaptations.
Patterson has also written a number of books about a New York City detective, Michael Bennett, with 10 adopted children. Another popular Patterson series is the Women's Murder Club, which was adapted into a short-lived TV show in 2007. Patterson’s repertoire extends to romance novels, science fiction, historical fiction and even nonfiction. In addition, he has authored books for younger readers, with series such as Maximum Ride and Witch & Wizard. Whatever the genre, Patterson is known for writing involving, page-turning stories.
Patterson's name appears on more books than most other authors; he released 13 books in both 2013 and 2012, and 14 books in 2011. Patterson’s prolific output is achieved with the help of co-authors. His first co-authored work was Miracle on the 17th Green (1996), written with Peter de Jonge.
When working with another writer, Patterson first writes an extensive outline, which is then sent to the co-author. The co-author produces the first draft, with Patterson keeping an eye on the story's progression and handling revisions before the book is published.
Both on his own and with co-authors, Patterson has had numerous best-sellers. He is in the Guinness World Records as the author with the most New York Times best-selling hardcover fiction books. Patterson earns millions each year for his work, and his success in brand management even became a case study at Harvard Business School.
Up to this day, James Patterson is given over a million books to schoolkids and over forty million dollars to support education and endowed over five thousand college scholarships for teachers. He writes full-time and lives in Florida with his family.
Patterson is silent on his religious views or upbringing.
Politics
Patterson appears to lean right and donates money to the Republican Party, though his books can contain themes popular with the left. Patterson is a bit more transparent when it comes to his political views - though it would seem he wouldn’t like to be.
Patterson’s books appear to favor the positions of the left, such as his book, Maximum Ride: The Final Warning. The central theme of this book, geared toward younger readers, revolves around the dangers of Global Warming, a common liberal rallying point.
Views
Patterson spent many of his younger working days cooking and cleaning in his grandmother's family-style restaurant along with the majority of his immediate and extended family. Through this experience, Patterson was exposed to many different types of people from different walks of life. His exposure led him to understand people and relate to unique situations that other people were experiencing. His parents and extended family nurtured his hard-working, driven attitude and never put limits on what he could or should carry out in life. Patterson grew up in the female-oriented family that gave him a unique perspective on women, which he routinely reflects on when writing female characters in his novels.
Now, Patterson says he can write anywhere, anytime, seven days a week and that inspiration for new stories is in a continual mental flood, the place he most likes to put that work down on paper is in the totally rebuilt 21,500-square-foot estate on Palm Beach's glistening shore.
James is passionate about encouraging children to read. Inspired by his own son who was a reluctant reader, he also writes a range of books for young readers including the Middle School, I Funny, Treasure Hunters, Dog Diaries and Max Einstein series.
Quotations:
"Somebody said the key to life is to work hard, play hard, rest hard, and I've pretty much adopted that."
"People like to talk more than they like to act. They like to sit there and complain and vent. Somehow they think that changes things, when it doesn't."
"I believe we should spend less time worrying about the quantity of books children read and more time introducing them to quality books that will turn them on to the joy of reading and turn them into lifelong readers."
"Once I got out of the advertising business, I had a lot more time. I remember going to my publisher, saying, "I want to do more than one book a year."
"Life is hard, and a lot of people come home tired from work. If they're gonna spend half an hour reading, they want some entertainment and a sense of achievement. So that's what I give them. That's all I'm trying to do. Is that really so wrong?"
Membership
In 2015, Patterson established the James Patterson Pledge with Scholastic Book Clubs to put books in the hands of young readers.
Personality
In his youth Patterson was a good student but didn't enjoy reading until after he graduated high school.
