James Briden attended middle school at The Gordon School in East Providence, graduated high school from Providence"s Moses Brown, and in 1985 received a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Boston College.

He has worked simultaneously as a lawyer during his career in elective office. In 1989, Mr. Briden earned his law degree from the University of Arizona. In 1989, Mr. Briden passed the Rhode Island bar exam and the following year he passed the Massachusetts bar as well.

James Briden has practiced law at Blais Cunningham & Crowe Chester, Limited Liability Partnership since 1996.
His practice includes immigration, bankruptcy, real estate, business, probate, and municipal/zoning law. City Solicitor
James Briden served as East Providence"s city solicitor/attorney from 2008 to 2010.
City Council
James Briden was sworn in on December 3, 2012 at East Providence City Hall with the four other individuals elected in November to serve on the city council. Mr. Briden was unanimously elected mayor during this inaugural ceremony.
His experience with parliamentary experience and his understanding of Robert"s Rules of Order, gained during his time as city solicitor, were cited as reasons for his election to the head council seat.
