(Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary...)
Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary thing about the past worth remembering, and that was the fact that it is past and can't be restored." Well, over recent years, The British Library, working with Microsoft has embarked on an ambitious programme to digitise its collection of 19th century books. There are now 65,000 titles available (that's an incredible 25 million pages) of material ranging from works by famous names such as Dickens, Trollope and Hardy as well as many forgotten literary gems , all of which can now be printed on demand and purchased right here on Amazon. Further information on The British Library and its digitisation programme can be found on The British Library website.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(When the news reached Engird that Mr. Layard had found th...)
When the news reached Engird that Mr. Layard had found the long lost Nineveh, and was opening its buried palaces to the light, very great and general interest was excited. It seemed as if the Nineveh of the Bible were about to be once more re( stored lor the contemplation of the Christian inquirer, and the Nineveh of the classics laid bare to modem gaze, to verify the faith of the scholar in the older historians. Mr. Layard sbook, when published, realized these anticipations. A city buried for more than twenty centuries offered its remains for comparison vith the aspects of modem London or Paris; and the sculp11 tured monuments of a bygone race rose up to offer a contrast with the works of modem art. Whilst this was the case in England, the French were almost equally interested, for they, Jtoo, had a diligent inquirer. Monsieur Botta, in A ssyria, digging and discovering and sending home the spoils of superb ancient edifices to increase the treasures of the Louvre. The English 3investigator had worked with limited funds supplied from private sources; the Frenchman, more fortunate, enjoyed the generous sympathies and liberal pecuniary aid of his government. Trv or -T tfoRNIA SANTA BARBARA PREFACE. This Book will surprise many, and entertain, it is hoped, not a few; but, above all, it will help to instruct the humblest of its readers in one of the most important lessons adapted to their condition namely, that there is no obscurity of birth, no privation of property, and no opposition either of powerful individuals, or still more powerful public bodies and governments, that may not be overcome, by industry, integrity, zeal, and perseverance ;no depth of misfortune, from which the victim may not hope to emerge, by labour, economy, temperance, and that single-mindedness which regards the faithful discharge of duty as the great object to which all others must be made subordinate. (Cornish-born writer, traveller and controversialist James...)
Cornish-born writer, traveller and controversialist James Silk Buckingham (1786-1855) spent much of his early life as a sailor in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and went on to publish accounts of his extensive travels to India, Palestine and Persia. His criticisms of the East India Company and the Bengal government led to his expulsion from India in 1823. In the 1830s he became a Member of Parliament and campaigned for social reforms and for the promotion of the temperance movement. He founded several journals, including the periodical The Athenaeum, covering a wide range of topics from literature to popular science. This illustrated two-volume work, published in 1827, recounts Buckingham's journey through Mesopotamia, giving descriptions of its ancient sites and opinions of its modern inhabitants. In Volume 2, Buckingham continues his travels through Mesopotamia, from Sinjar in the north-west of the region to the city of Baghdad.

He was born at Flushing near Falmouth, the son of a farmer, and had a limited education.
James Silk Buckingham infused a new light to Indian Journalism. He was the pioneer among the Europeans who fought for a liberal press in India. His youth was spent at sea, and in 1797 he was captured by the French and held as a prisoner of war at Corunna.
In 1821, his "Travels in Palestine" were published, followed by "Travels Among the Arab Tribes" in 1825.
After years of wandering he settled in India, where he established a periodical, the Calcutta Journal, in 1818. This venture at first proved highly successful, but in 1823 the paper"s outspoken criticisms of the East India Company led to the expulsion of Buckingham from India and to the suppression of the paper by John Adam, the acting governor-general in 1823.
His case was brought before a select committee of the House of Commons in 1834, and a pension of £500 a year was subsequently awarded to him by the East India Company as compensation. Buckingham continued his journalistic ventures on his return to England.
He settled at Cornwall Terrace, Regent"s Park, and started the Oriental Herald and Colonial Review (1824-1829) and the Athenaeum (1828) which was not a success in his hands, Buckingham selling to John Sterling after a few weeks.
In parliament, where he sat as member for Sheffield from 1832–1837, he was a strong advocate of social reform, calling for the end of flogging in the armed services, abolition of the press-gang and the repeal of the Corn Laws. He was a prolific writer He had travelled in Europe, America and the East, and wrote many useful travel books, as well as many pamphlets on political and social subjects.
"In 1851, the value of these and of his other literary works was recognized by the grant of a Civil List pension of £200 a year.
At the time of his death in London, Buckingham was at work on his autobiography, two volumes of the intended four being completed and published (1855)". This work is important as it mentions in detail the life of the black composer Joseph Antonio Emidy who settled in Truro.
He was the pioneer among the Europeans who fought for a liberal press in India.
