James B. Campbell was born on February 16, 1944, in Rutland, Vermont, United States. He is the son of James B. and Dorothy Ann (Tison) Campbell.
Campbell graduated from Dartmouth College with a bachelor's degree in 1966. He then received his master's degree and his doctorate from the University of Kansas in 1972 and 1976, respectively. Campbell also attended the University of Nottingham.
Campbell started his career as a research assistant in Geologic Research Section at Kansas Geological Survey in 1972, and since 1976, he has been working at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University at Blacksburg, first as an assistant professor, then as an associate professor, and starting from 1988, as a professor of geography there. Since 1993, Campbell also holds the position of the department head at the university.
During his career, Campbell has served in the U. S. Army from 1966 to 1970.
During his long career as an educator and geologist, James B. Campbell has worked closely with students and faculty in related fields such as forestry, geology, agronomy, environmental sciences, and planning. He is known as the author of numerous technical articles and several books, including Mapping the Land: Aerial Imagery for Land Use Information, Soil Landscape Analysis and Introduction to Remote Sensing series.
