James P. Carrigan is an American lawyer based in Boston, Massachusetts. He was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1987 after completing degrees at Trinity College and the George Washington University Law Center. His documented practice has covered business law, intellectual property, and antitrust, with work at Bingham LLP and later at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP.
Education
Carrigan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College in 1984. Trinity was founded in 1823 as Washington College in Hartford, Connecticut, and took the name Trinity College in 1845. Although the college had Episcopal roots, its charter barred religious standards from being imposed on students, faculty, or other members of the college. It became coeducational in 1969, and the entering class of September 1984 was the first in its history in which women outnumbered men.
He received a Juris Doctor with honors from the George Washington University Law Center in 1987. The law school was established in 1865 as the Columbian College Law Department and is the oldest law school in Washington, D.C. The Juris Doctor degree was established there in 1936, and the school operated as the National Law Center from 1959 to 1996 before taking the George Washington University Law School name.
Carrigan was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1987, the year he completed his law degree. Admission to a state bar licenses a lawyer to practice law in that jurisdiction.
Career
Carrigan's documented professional life is in private law practice in Boston. He served as a partner at Bingham LLP. The firm's roots lay in Bingham, Dana & Gould, founded in Boston in 1891, which merged in 2002 with the San Francisco firm McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen to form Bingham McCutchen. Further mergers extended the firm to Hartford, New York, and Southern California, among other places.
In November 2014, Bingham McCutchen's partners approved a combination with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, a Philadelphia firm founded in 1873. The combined firm adopted the Morgan Lewis & Bockius name, and Bingham McCutchen ceased to exist as a provider of legal services. Carrigan is documented as an attorney with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Boston, where he practices in intellectual property.
His listed practice areas include business law, intellectual property, and antitrust law. Massachusetts licensing records also describe a practice focused on licensing, commercial matters, and mergers and acquisitions.
