Freda Comley was a member of the American Red Cross Motor Corps from 1940 to 1945. Mrs. Comley was a motorist in the unit transporting volunteers and nurses to and from their posts at the Bedford Veterans Affairs Medical Center which specialized in treating neuropsychiatric patients.
From 1961 to 1970, Freda B. Comley was elected to the Bedford, Massachusetts Board of Public Welfare. She served as the Welfare Board Representative on the Bedford Council On Aging and was a delegate for The March of Dimes, environmental issues, and women’s rights.
Freda Comley was a member of the Grange for over 75 years and served as Secretary for over 40 years.
Virginia Keefe Comley was born in Waltham, Massachusetts. She graduated from Waltham High School and went to work at New England Telephone and Telegraph Company until 1956. In 1953, she married James F. Comley and moved to Bedford. The couple founded an elevator service and repair business in 1968 and then bought and sold several other companies to form what is now known as Embree Elevator. Virginia retired from the company in 1998 after 30 years serving as co-founder, secretary and bookkeeper. Virginia was a long-standing member of St. Michael's Parish, a member of the Bedford Garden Club and a supporter of several charities, including The Theatre Museum, Central Park Conservancy's Women's Committee, The Actors Fund and The Hampton Classic, among others. Virginia is an Honorary Alumnae of UMASS Lowell, where there is an endowed scholarship in her name.
