After living for a time in Tucson, he settled in Phoenix, and in 1894 directed the first construction work at Fort Huachua, building materials for which had to be hauled by mule team from Tombstone.
In Phoenix he was the architect of a number of important buildings including the old City Hall (one-time seat of the Territorial Government), the first building on the campus of the University known as "Old Main," in recent years taken over and remodeled by the U. S. Navy; the old Dominion Hotel; and the Balke Building at First and Adams Streets. In addition he designed the first brick building at the old Tempe Normal School' (now a unit at State College), and the first school house in the Phoenix-Osbom district; the County Court House at Florence, Ariz., and the Odd Fellows Hall at Tucson.
