James Gould Cutler was born in 1848 in Albany, New York, United States, where his father and grandfather had a carriage manufactory.
He moved to Rochester, and after some experience as draftsman, set up an office for himself in 1872. For more than twenty years Mr. Cutler carried on a successful practice, his work comprising a variety of buildings such as factories, office and bank buildings and private homes.
Also active in civic affairs, between 1900 and 1903 he served on the Commission of Public Safety, and in the latter year was elected Mayor of Rochester. Retiring from practice before the turn of the century Mr. Cutler was connected with both banking interests and a business. He was the inventor of mail chutes for office buildings, patented in 1883 under the name of "Letter Box Connections," and with his brother, J.Warren Cutler, established the Cutler Manufacturing Company to build and install the mail chutes.
For three years was president of the State Association of Architects.
