The second son of Trevor and Jacqueline Dagwell, he was brought up in Devon, South London and East Sussex.

James was educated at Beacon Community College, a state comprehensive school in the town of Crowborough in East Sussex, followed by Royal Holloway College, University of London, where he studied for a Bachelor in English and Drama, graduating in 1996.
He started as a news desk assistant on GMTV. Then became one of the United Kingdom"s first videojournalists for a London cable news station in 1997. Then a presenter and reporter for Independent Television Westcountry news in Plymouth, Devon in 1998.
He joined the British Broadcasting Corporation in 2000 as a producer for Newsround. In 2003, he moved to British Broadcasting Corporation Three at the launch of their nightly news show The 7 O"Clock News as a reporter.
In 2006, he became a presenter of 60 Seconds on British Broadcasting Corporation Three for two years and launched the nightly Entertainment 24 on British Broadcasting Corporation News 24.
In 2008 he moved to anchor overnight news on British Broadcasting Corporation News and British Broadcasting Corporation World News until 2011, including daytime breakfast bulletins during the 2008 Olympic Games and news on British Broadcasting Corporation News Online and British Broadcasting Corporation Red Button. He had his own entertainment show, E24, at weekends on both British Broadcasting Corporation News and British Broadcasting Corporation World News about theatre, film, music and arts news and interviews and also on British Broadcasting Corporation News Online and British Broadcasting Corporation iPlayer. He has presented entertainment news on Claudia Winkleman"s British Broadcasting Corporation Radio 2 programme on Fridays and previously Your News for the British Broadcasting Corporation and STORYFix, an irreverent look back at the week"s news, one of British Broadcasting Corporation News"s first vodcasts.
He took a sabbatical in 2011 and returned in 2012 as a Producer for British Broadcasting Corporation News.
