Two daughter Went to sea as apprentice in the Mercantile Marine service at the age of thirteen, and obtained first command at the age of twenty-one. Commanded the Ceylon Government steamers Manchester and Pearl, 1859-1863, when promoted to be Master Attendant, Colombo. Joint Police Magistrate, Colombo.

And held these appointments until 1 May 1902, when retired on pension after fortythree years’ service. On retirement received the honour of Companion of Saint Michael and Saint George for long and valuable services in connection with Colombo harbour and the pearl fisheries of Ceylon. Retired from Ceylon Government service.
Spouse 1858, Rebecca Gillespie,daughter of Win. Skinner, of East India Company’s Service, and g.-daughter of Major-General Sir Robt. Rollo Gillespie.
