Background
Duff was the son of Sir Alexander Duff, younger brother of James Duff, 4th Earl Fife and Anne Stein, the daughter of James Stein of Gilbogie.

He was created Baron Skene, of Skene, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, in 1857. This allowed him to sit and vote in the House of Lords. In 1845, he resided at 30 Pall Mall, London and at Delgatie Castle.
They had five children.
Lady Anne Duff, married John Townshend, 5th Marquess Townshend, and had issue. Lady Ida Duff, married firstly, Adrian Hope and had issue.
Married secondly William Wilson, with no issue. Alexander, created Duke of Fife in 1889.
Lady Alexina Duff, married Henry Coventry, with no issue.
Lady Agnes Duff, married firstly George Hay-Drummond, son of George Hay-Drummond, 12th Earl of Kinnoull, and had issue. Married secondly Herbert Flower, with no issue. Married thirdly Alfred Cooper, with issue.
David Cameron, the United Kingdom Prime Minister, is a descendant of this third marriage.
