James Jr. Gallier was born in 1827.
James Gallier, Jr., graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1848.
He acquired an early training in his father's office, and following the latter's retirement because of ill health in 1850, James, Jr. continued his practice. The French Opera House, completed in 1859, was designed in association with his father and stood until 1917 at the corner of Bourbon and Toulouse Streets. Another noted building in New Orleans planned and erected by the Galliers was the Pontabla, a block of apartments on Jackson Street (no longer standing) said to have been the most luxurious apartment hotel of that period.
In 1853, he married Josephine A. Villavaso of St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. The couple had four daughters.
