James Samuel Gordon was born on October 12, 1941 in New York, United States. He is the son of Jules David Gordon, a surgeon, and Cynthia (Hymanson) Gordon.

Gordon attained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962, graduating from Harvard Medical School. Later, James decided to continue his studies and five years later, in 1967, he got Doctor of Medicine degree at the same education establishment.
James began his career as a volunteer physician at the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic during the 1960s, when he graduated from medical school. In 1968 Gordon started to work as a resident and chief psychiatrist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, a post he held till 1971, when Gordon was appointed a research psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health. The psychiatrist held this position until 1982.
During the period from 1974 to 1975 he served as a visiting professor at Catholic University of America.
Gordon was appointed a director of special studies and alternative services for President’s Committee on Mental Health in 1978, a post he held just for one year.
Since 1980 James has been working as a director of the Program of Mind-Body Studies at Georgetown University School of Medicine, also serving as a clinical professor.
In 2000 a former United States President Bill Clinton appointed him a chair of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy. Gordon held this position till 2002.
Currently, James Gordon is woking as a director of The Center for Mind-Body Medicine.
