Background

Gould, James was born on December 5, 1770 in Branford, Connecticut, United States. Son of William and Mary (Foote) Gould.

Education

Graduated from Yale, 1791. Attended Tapping Reeve’s Law School, Litchfield, Connecticut, 1795.

Career

School teacher, Wethersfield, Connecticut, later, Baltimore, 1791-1793. Tutor Yale, 1793-1795. Associate in conducting Tapping Reeve’s Law School, 1798-1820, took charge of school, 1820.

Judge Connecticut Superior Court and Court of Errors, 1816-1819 (retired because of Connecticut Constitution of 1818). Forced to close law school due to ill health, 1833. Author: Principles of Pleading in Civil Actions, 1832.
