He was educated at Harrow School and became a lieutenant in the 1st Life Guards.
He inherited his peerage in 1895. He became Justice of the Peace for Hertfordshire and captain in the Hertfordshire Yeoman Cavalry. In 1895 he succeeded his father in the earldom and entered the House of Lords.
