James was born on the 10th of June, 1859 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, United Kingdom. The son of late Reverend John Guthrie, Doctor of Divinity.
James Guthrie studied at Glasgow High School and University. He trained as a lawyer before turning to art.
After brief but stimulating periods in London and Paris, James Guthrie committed himself to painting directly from nature in Scotland. Guthrie also experimented with pastel drawings and established a reputation as a successful portrait painter. He became president of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1902 and was knighted the following year.
James Guthrie was best known in his own lifetime for his portraiture. He was strongly influenced by the French Realists and was associated with the Glasgow Boys. His famouse paintings included "Schoolmates" and "A Hind's Daughter". Among his most successful portraits were those of his mother, Mr R. Garroway, Major Hotchkiss, Mrs Fergus, Professor Jack, and Mrs Watson.
James Guthrie was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1902.
