(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(His PREFACE It is beyond question that even among Irishme...)
His PREFACE It is beyond question that even among Irishmen much ignorance prevails respecting the history of I reland. It is nothing short of scandalous that the study of I rish history has been excluded from the programme of the National Schools of the country, with the inevitable result that the larger proportion of our young people grow up knowing little or nothing of the formative influences and chequered experiences through which I reland has passed, and how she has come to be what she is to-day. The primary object of the author in giving the following pages to the public is to awaken or stimulate a keener interest in this subject in the circles to which his volume may have access. Partly for this purpose, but also because ecclesiastical history is inseparable from civil, he has combined a picture of the social and civil state of I reland with the story of the Celtic Church. The work is thus a rapid sketch of I rish affairs generally, with special attention to the ecclesiastical department, through a period of much more than a thousand years. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER Vin SOME FAMOUS MONASTERIES AND MONKS Patrick's immediate disciples, and the monasteries Patrick's or churches founded by them, can be referred to dliclJ'leonly in the briefest terms. Most prominent among these was Mochay, son of Bronach, daughter of Milchu, already mentioned. Mochay was converted by Patrick about 433, founded his monastery on Nendrum or Mahee island, in Strangford Lough, about 450, and died in 497. In this monastery education was combined with monastic discipline. Finnian, the founder of Moville, and Colman, the founder of Dromore, both got their training under Mochay. Six brothers of his were ecclesiastics, one of them having been Bishop Mac Erc of Donaghmore, in County Down. Then there was Mochta, a Briton, who founded a monastery at Louth, which contained 300 presbyters, 100 bishops, and 60 or 80 singers, who "ploughed not, reaped not, dried not corn, laboured not save at learning only." There was Benen or Benignus of Kilbennan, near Galway, where the ruins of a monastery and a round tower are still to be seen. He was one of the nine said to have been appointed to revise the laws. There was Fiacc of Sleaty (Sleibhte), to whom a hymn in praise of Patrick is ascribed. There was Lomman, son of Gollit, a Briton, and of Darerca, sister of Patrick, and therefore at once Patrick's nephew and disciple, who founded a church at Trim. He had four brothers--Manis, who was a bishop in Forgney, County Longford; Broccaide, whose church was at Imleach Each, in County Mayo; Brocan and Mugenog, whose churches were in the great plain of Bregia, in Meath. There was Mel, also said to have been a nephew of Patrick, who became abbot and bishop of Ardagh. There was Sechnall or Secundinus, still another nephew of Patrick, son...
