James Kent, American jurist, legal commentator. member of New York State Assembly, 1790, 92, 96; member of council of revision charged with examining bills from the legislature and vetoing them at their discretion, 1798-1821.

Kent, James was born on July 31, 1763 in Fredericksburg, New York, United States. Son of Moses and Hannah (Rogers) Kent.

Bachelor of Arts, Yale, 1781.

Career

Admitted to New York Supreme Court bar, 1785. Member of New York State Assembly, 1790, 92, 96. Professor of law Columbia, 1793-1798, 1823-1826.

Master New York Court Chancery, 1796-1798. Recorder New York City, March 1797. Justice New York Supreme Court, 1798, introduced custom of submitting opinions of important cases in writing.

Member of council of revision charged with examining bills from the legislature and vetoing them at their discretion, 1798-1821. Helped edit revised statutes of State of New York, 1802. Chief justice New York Supreme Court, 1804-1814.

Chancellor New York, 1814-1823. Developed, preserved a line of decisions in law and equity which are fundamental in American jurisprudence. President New York History Society, 1828.

Prepared Course of Reading for Merc. library association of New York. A founder Phi Beta Kappa chapter at Yale. Author: Commentaries On American Law, 4 vols., published 1826-1830.
