Educated at Bethelehem, he then left school in 1935 to work at a Witwatersrand gold mine.
Joined the Nationalists when he was 21 and became a party worker in Brakpan at the 1938 elections. Studied on his own for a Bachelor of Arts degree and then a Bachelor of Law degree from Witwatersrand University. In 1955 he moved to Pretoria and set himself up as a lawyer.
He entered Parliament by winning the Prinshof constituency of Pretoria on March 30, 1966. After a quiet apprenticeship for six years he became a deputy minister in the July 1962 reshuffle.
Rugged mineworker who turned himself into a lawyer by studying at night. A Nationalist Party worker helping at elections for almost 30 years before standing for Parliament himself.
