Studied at Wanlockhead Parish School. Andersonian University, Glasgow. Was for some years in a foreign shipping merchant’s office m Glasgow.
Went to Valparaiso in 1867. Went to Portland, Oregon, in 1872, and commenced business as a shipping merchant. Appointed British Vice-Consul, 1874.
Retired from business, 1895, when commissioned Consul for the States of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. The State of Montana added to district 1907, Territory of Alaska 1908. His Britannic Majesty’s Consul, Portland, Oregon, United States of America.
