He was educated at Princeton University, he received a practical training in architecture under William A. Potter of New York.
In practice for himself during the latter part of the century, Mr. Lord designed the two Delmonico Restaurants (completed prior to 1893); Babies’ Hospital; New York City Branch Library at 222 East 79th Street, and the Appelate Court Building on Madison Avenue at 25th Street, his last and most important architectural achievement.
His early commissions, from 1883, were for residences in New York; Yonkers, Roslyn, Long Island; Tuxedo Park, New York; and Bar Harbor, Maine.
He was a member of the Metropolitan Club, the Union League, the Players Club, the Racquet Club and professionally of the American Institute of Architects and the National Academy of Design, where he was a Fellow.
He married Mary Townsend Nicoll, of a distinguished New York family.
