Career
He succeeded his father in the peerage in 1638. A Roman Catholic, he joined Sir Phelim O"Neill and commanded the defense of Charlemont in 1650. The fortress fell to the Cromwellians in August.
Hamilton became a fugitive and was captured soon after.
His lands were confiscated, and he sought the protection of Sir Charles Coote. But in December 1650, he returned to his old cause and took arms again with Sir Phelim.
