Entered R.E. 1882; Captain 1890. Brevet Major, 1895; Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel 1899. Major, 1899; Brevet Colonel 1900.
Colonel 1905; Brigade-General commanding Presidency Brigade, India, 1905. Served with Hazara Expedition, 1888 (despatches, medal and clasp). Chief Engineer Preliminary Survey for Uganda Railway, 1891-1892.

Nouma Expedition, 1893. Acting Commissioner Uganda Protectorate, 1893. Commanded operations against rebels, Uganda, 1893 (acknowledgment of Government, medal).
Chief Stall' Officer Unyoro Expedition, 1893-1894 (medal, brevet of Major, Brilliant Star of Zanzibar, 2nd class). Chief command of operations in Uganda, 1897-1898. Commanded at action of Lubwa’s Hill, siege of Lubwa’s Fort, engagements of Kizalera, Kijembo, etc.
(medal with 2 clasps, brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel, thanks of Government). Commanded Juba Expedition, 1898-1899. Director of Railways, China Expeditionary Force, 1901 (despatches, brevet of Colonel, medal).
Commanded operations in Thibet, 1903-1904, including engagements at Guru, Niani, Tsechen, capture of Gyantseand advance to Lhasa (medal and clasp, Knight Commander of the Indian Empire). Commanding Lucknow Infantry Brigade, 1907-1909. Decorated for services in Uganda and Thibet. Cartulary-register 1904; ,i Royal Engineers; commanding troops in Mauritius since 1909.
