Background

Macfarlane, James was born on February 18, 1873 in Bankfoot, Perthshire, Scotland. Son of Peter. and Louise (Marshall) Macfarlane.

Education

Marine engineer Indra and Atlas Line, 1896-1901. Superintendent machinist Panama R.R., Panama, 1901-1905. Rebuilt and operated dredges and maintained channel for seagoing ships from French dock at La Boca, deep water terminal for the transisthmian railroad, 1905-1918.

Superintendent floating equipment and dredging, Panama Canal. Also member Board of Local Inspectors. Had entire charge of dredging operations in Culebra Cut during the first trying years when slides so frequently blocked the Canal.

Superintendent Havana Marine Railways, Inc., 1918, general manager, 1922. President MacFarlane Foundry and Honolulu Iron Works S.A., Sagua la Grande, Cuba, Member American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
