After graduation, James McCamant served at the United States Marine Corps from 1955 to 1959. There he received the rank of the first lieutenant. In 1984 James became an editor at the Medical Technology Stock Letter, the oldest biotech newsletter in the country. Then, since 2001 he serves as an editor-at-large. He is a constant news source for major media publications, including BusinessWeek, the Wall Street Journal, and Worth Magazine. Besides, James is a founder and principal of a Schaefer, Lowe & McCamant, and San Francisco Investment Corp, brokerage firms.
Also, James McCamant is a writer. His work currently includes one book, Biotech Investing: Every Investor's Guide. James wrote it under the name Jim McCamant. Chapters in this book cover a history of the field, how to invest, a state-of-the-art summary of biotechnology, patents, and the clinical review process, and the future of biotechnology.

James McCamant's wife's name is Mary Ann. They have four children: Megan, John, Katherine, and Freya.
