After graduation taught an Academy in the Province of Quebec for one year. Taught the Latin and Greek Classics in the Cobourg Collegiate Institute for three years. Went to Brantford, Ontario, as headmaster of High School, 1873.
Raised the school to a first-class Collegiate Institute in three years. Organised the Farmers’ Institutes of Ontario, and took ■charge of them for ten years. Organised and controlled the provincial Travelling Dairies.
Was Director of the three Dairy Schools of the Province. And as Chairman of Board of Directors of the Fruit Experiment Stations of Ontario, rendered valuable service in testing the suitability or non-suitability of different varieties of fruit to the varying conditions of soil and climate throughout the Province. President Ontario Agricultural College, 1879-1904.
Member of the Board of Regents of Victoria University for 20 years, and of the Senate of the University of Toronto for 16 years. Member of the Board of Railway Commissioners for Canada since 1904. Member of Railway Commission for Canada since 1904.
