Career
He was the chair of the Appropriations committee from 1933 on. Following his death he was succeeded in a special election by the head of the National Youth Administration of Texas, Lyndon Baines Johnson who became the 36th President of the United States in 1963. Buchanan Dam and the lake it forms, Lake Buchanan, are named in his honor.
Both are located about 12 miles (19 km) west of Burnet, Texas.
